With summer comes a lot of wonderful things: BBQs, breezy dresses, and a low-maintenance makeup regimen. But, let’s face it: healthy hair is not on that list. Just like the sun is damaging on skin, it can also wreak havoc on your mane. (Speaking of skincare, if you’ve been neglecting sunscreen lately, please step away from the computer and apply a coat or two. We’ll wait here.)

1. Macadamia Natural Oil Deep Repair Masque
Made with macadamia and argan oils, this mask is the most intensive of the bunch. The instructions suggest leaving the product in for no longer than seven minutes, and we can see why. It starts to work as soon as you apply it, making your hair instantly feel softer. If you like living on the edge, you can keep it in for an hour, or even overnight, but if your hair falls out, don’t say we didn’t warn you. We kid, go (macadamia) nuts! See what we did there? 2. Moroccanoil Restorative Hair Mask
In the past few years, it’s become nearly impossible to read a hair product post that doesn’t rave about the wonders of Moroccanoil. Easily the most expensive mask on this list ($74 for a 500ml tub), this cult favourite is definitely worth it. Chock-full of argan oil and protein, you’ll only need a tiny amount to cover your entire head. Seriously, it’ll last you an eternity. Plus, the scent! Trust us: you’ll want to smell like this all day long. And by “all day long,” we mean forever.
3. Coconut Oil
Speaking of oils that smell good enough to eat, here’s one you actually can! Find yourself a tub of virgin coconut oil (available at any health food store) and apply onto your scalp, massaging from your roots to ends. This is one we recommend leaving in overnight; just make sure to wrap your hair in a towel or shower cap. Coconut oil is, well, oily, and will leave a greasy surprise on your pillowcase. After rinsing in the morning, you’ll notice shinier, softer hair, as well as relief from dandruff and itchiness. Did we mention that it’s cheap as all heck? Stock up, and while you’re at it, slather some onto your skin as well; its moisturizing abilities are incredible. You won’t be disappointed!
4. Neutrogena Triple Moisture Deep Recovery Hair Mask
This one has been around forever, and it’s becoming harder and harder to find. We get ours shipped from Amazon.com because it’s not carried in Canada. Thankfully, it’s wallet-friendly (US $7!) so paying a bit for shipping ain’t no thang. While the other masks feel, for lack of a better word, slimy (oh, did we forget to mention that?), Neutrogena’s is silky smooth. Enriched with meadowfoam seed that seeps into your hair to moisturize, and sweet almond that wraps the surface to trap the moisture in, it really is a miracle mask.
5. Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Listen, we know you have some in your kitchen, so there’s no excuse to neglect this one. Olive oil works wonders on extremely dry hair, but we suggest you skip it if your hair is on the finer side, as it may be a bit too heavy. Now, before you run to your pantry, we cannot stress this enough: you only need a tiny amount. No more than a tablespoon or your hair will seriously get weighed down and greasy (and you’ll literally smell like a salad all day, so the choice is yours).
