Heading to the beach on a hot sunny summer’s day, and wondering what kinds of nibbles you should bring? Here are six light, easy, healthy snacks that are sure to satisfy your beach-side taste buds, without adding to your waistline.
Popcorn & pistachios
Here’s an easy combination that will satisfy any salty and sweet cravings you have. The nuts add the richness with their healthy fats, as well as a little salt (unless you opt for unsalted nuts); although popcorn doesn’t taste sweet, it is a whole grain, so it will actually start to taste sweet as long as you savour it slowly and enjoy each bite.
Citrus salad
Remove the skin from grapefruit and oranges, cut into wedges and toss with a little mint. Simple. Tart. Delicious.
Frozen grapes
If you’ve never had frozen grapes, you are missing out! They are sooo refreshing — and so sweet. Oh, and they’re healthy, too!
Raw veggies
Did you know that a cup of sliced peppers contains only 40 calories? Nibble raw veggies for more than an hour and you’ll pretty much burn off every single calorie in the process!
Pop chips
If your decision to go to the beach is a bit last-minute and you don’t have time to make anything, skip the local hot dog cart and get some of these crunchy carbs: pop chips are tasty, low-cal (about 100 calories per bag) and about as natural as can be when it comes to packaged foods. My favourite: BBQ.
Bevvies
Staying hydrated is essential at the beach. Not only does hydration help you maintain your energy levels, it also means less sweat. Iced coffee is refreshing — with a kick. For an even lower-calorie beverage, try an herbal tea with blended ice; unlike a slurpee, it’s sugar free. And you can never go wrong with water; add lemon, lime or mint for a bit of zip! Or, bring it along in the melon variety. Red, ripe, and ’rrrumptious!
