It’s estimated that people who work from home, world-wide, number in the tens of millions (there is no way to get an exact figure). This staggering number includes telecommuters — people who work from home for an employer — and people who are their own bosses, of which I am one: I own my own business and run it out of my house — out of my Martini Room, to be exact!

Whether you’re your own boss or someone else’s employee, working from home is a dream for many people. It sounds absolutely wonderful: grab a cup of coffee in your pjs, head into your office and start your day stress-free. In a perfect world, yes this is what working from home is. But we all know there is no such thing as a perfect world; if there was, I would be naked in a hotel room with George Clooney instead of sitting in my pjs writing this. Things happen, you get distracted, kids stay home sick, dog ate your homework. Oftentimes, it is really hard to focus when you stay home, with that pile of laundry chanting “wash me, wash me…”

When I started working from home, the most important thing to me was to have a designated space that was my Works Place. It was useless to have to pull out my laptop in the dining room every morning and “set up” my office. So I researched and asked questions, and came up with a place to create an effective working environment in my home. Here are my top five tips.

Be a Geek: Go to your local tech store and let them know you are setting up a home office. Bring your smart phone, tablet, laptop — whatever you have. You will be amazed at how many time- and space-saving gadgets are out there, any of which will really improve your office functionality and your time management.

Don’t Forget the Pretty: Think outside the cubicle. Hang your favourite art on the walls, or a nice mirror. Make your space pleasing by adding pieces you love. It will make you want to be in the space and in turn get your creative juices flowing.

Let There Be Light: This is key. Bring a picture of your space to a lighting store, and let them show you what will work best. Even if the specialty store is too pricey, talk to an expert, get the ideas, then purchase things you need within your budget, somewhere else. All women know there is nothing better than good lighting.

Sit Down: Buy a FABOOSH office chair. This is one area you should not skimp on. Think about how long you will be sitting in it, every day. It needs to be both functional and ergonomically correct. This should be a splurge in your office.

Choose Wisely: Don’t just make the obvious empty room in your home as your choice of office. If it’s in the basement and you’re not a basement type, are you really going to feel motivated to go down there every day? Look at the corners in your home: Is there one where you could tuck in a work station? There are so many office options now that don’t look like office furniture. You can stick a home office just about anywhere and have it work in with your decor.
