Go beyond burgundy this fall and embrace one of the hottest hues of the season: oxblood. After making a splash on several runways (from Alexander Wang to Rodarte), this rich, sophisticated riff on red is staking its claim on the style spotlight. So how should you wear it? Incorporate oxblood pieces into your existing wardrobe, either with accessories or more prominent items like blazers and pencil skirts.

1. Pencil skirt
The classic pencil skirt never really goes out of style but that doesn’t mean it can’t be updated. Skip standard grey or black and go for one in oxblood instead (Dorothy Perkins). Add a cream blouse or grey fitted sweater for a twist on everyday office wear.

2. Scarf
Add interest to a neutral coat or jacket with a scarf in this fall’s go-to hue (Topshop). Not only will this chunky cable knit scarf kill the chill, it offers a simple but stylish way to wear the trend.

3. Jersey tank
Sexy and sophisticated all rolled into one, this ultra-soft semi-sheer jersey tank (Net-a-Porter) can easily be worn under your favorite blazer to add a touch of the oxblood trend to your outfit. Pair with slim tailored trousers and wedge booties to complete the look.

4. Skinny jeans
With boot season upon us skinny jeans are a girl’s best friend since they make it easy to slip into your favourite pair — be it riding, motorcycle or a stacked heel style. Rather than going for standard denim, opt for a colour instead — in this case, oxblood –  and kick your outfit up a notch (eLUXE). Pair with riding boots and a tailored blazer for effortless cooler weather style.

5. Sweater
‘Tis the season to be cozy, so why not stay warm while incorporating oxblood into your wardrobe? This knitted high-neck jumper (Topshop) is an ideal topper for any kind of denim, from dark and skinny to printed to tapered to baggy (this season’s twist on the boyfriend jean).

6. Shoulder bag
Whether you’re heading to the office or out with friends after work, this Marc by Marc Jacobs leather shoulder bag (FarFetch) makes for an easy way to work the oxblood trend into your look. The gold tone chain shoulder strap adds a luxe element to the timeless structured shoulder bag silhouette.

7. Bracelet
Mixing the macabre with high style, this Steve McQueen leather bracelet features a twin set of the fashion house’s signature skull charms (Bergdorf Goodman). Wear this edgy-chic piece with dark denim, motorcycle boots and graphic sweater for an on trend ode to fall.

8. Ankle booties
Footwear is a great way to introduce a new hue into your look and ankle booties are another must-buy trend of the season. Wear this Alexander Wang oxblood pair (Net-a-Porter) with anything from dark skinny jeans and a slouchy sweater to neutral shift dress and knit tights.
