As much fun as the holiday season is, all of those late nights, impromptu gatherings, festive cocktails and the endless array of sweet treats can wreak havoc on your skin. If your complexion is in desperate need of a post-holiday detox, we’re here to help. With a few simple strategies, you’ll have your glow back in no time.
Get back on track with a targeted mask
Post-party skin is often lacklustre skin, or skin that has broken out or become otherwise irritated, dry and dull. Fix what ails your complexion (or at least help heal the damage) with a mask targeted to your skin’s needs. Feeling flakey? Pick up a hydrating mask. Battling blemishes? Find a mask that unclogs pores and refines skin. Dealing with red, itchy skin? There are masks that soothe and diminish redness. By adding a mask to your skin care routine once or twice a week you can help speed recovery and give your complexion what it needs to get back on track (no matter how many champagne cocktails were consumed last week).
Set things right with more sleep
The less sleep you get, the worse you’ll feel and the more the effects of staying up until the wee hours will show up on your face. Puffy eyes, dark circles and pale skin are dead giveaways that you’ve been skipping sleep for other pursuits, so now that party season is winding down, getting your glow back can be as simple as getting more rest. Get yourself back onto a regular sleep schedule (going to bed and getting up around the same time), and aim to get at least seven hours of uninterrupted sleep every night. Not only will you have more energy, your skin will look fresh and even toned without having to rely on too much makeup.
Fix your face through diet
You’ve likely heard the saying “you are what you eat” and believe it or not, it’s true. What you eat not only effects how you feel and how your jeans fit, your diet also plays a significant role in how smooth and clear your skin looks. Loading up on sugar, alcohol, caffeine and processed foods during the holidays can mean dull, lacklustre skin, blemishes and other complexion concerns that require an extra layer of concealer to deal with. Remedy any post-party skin sins you may have committed by adopting a clean eating plan – stock up on dark leafy greens, colourful fruits and vegetables, lean protein and healthy fats and swap soda and coffee for water spiked with lemon juice. A few weeks of eating well and flushing toxins with the help of lemon water will help get your complexion back on track.
Pamper and detoxify with a sea salt bath soak
Sooth tired muscles and purge toxins from your body by indulging in a sea salt bath soak. Check your local health food store or nearby spa for a brand that is all natural and designed to detoxify. Fill the tub, add your salts and soak away the post-holiday stress. Better yet, apply your targeted mask while you soak to get a double dose of skin-saving power.
