Celeb-spotting in Toronto last month: The lovely Rachel Bilson jetted in as the new ambassador for Magnum Ice Cream. You may have seen the commercial where she goes climbing over cars on a crowded highway for a coveted “mini bar” (that’s, mini ice cream bar, BTW). Rachel takes over the reins from previous celebrity ambassador Ivanka Trump, who helped position the brand as a premium ice cream treat.
Being a petite 5’2″ has its benefits. The Hart of Dixie star joked that she landed the job to promote the new mini bars because she is mini herself. She adds spokesperson to her impressive list of credits that include actress, fashion designer and style columnist. She even has a home décor line of dinnerware and linens at Macy’s! She’s made the quiet jump from The OC to style mogul.
Rachel posed for pictures inside the Hazelton Hotel in a cute yellow wrap dress and delicate silver heels. Her style is very casual and relaxed and she definitely evokes a California cool with her hair in soft beachy waves, so effective that I was singing the OC theme song in my head before she sat down to chat with me.
Slice: How would you describe your personal style?
Rachel: Well, I like to be comfortable, so I guess I would switch it up depending on the day. But I like experimenting. And I like starting with the basics and adding to it. So, white T-shirt and jeans — and then you have really cool shoes or a bag.
Slice: Is that a California laid-back aesthetic?
Rachel: I guess so, I would say that. Since I grew up there, I definitely have a more chill approach to clothes.
Slice: What’s an easy trend that anyone can pull off?
Rachel: Pastels are really big this summer and anyone can wear them in the right shade, depending on your skin tone and your hair. That’s an easy one.
Slice: Are you getting into the neon trend at all?
Rachel: I like brights every once in a while and I have bright yellow on. Neons, for a minute, I was kind of into. Maybe in the footwear department or purses, they were cute.
Slice: Where would you go on your dream vacation?
Rachel: I’ve been fortunate to travel to quite a few places, but I would love to go to India. The people, the culture — would really like to experience that.
Slice: you seem happy working with Magnum.
Rachel: I love ice cream and sweets and I got to work with Karl Lagerfeld, so it’s like my dream job — to eat ice cream and work with Karl.
Famous fashion designer Lagerfeld directed three Magnum commercials starring Rachel, all shot on location in Paris. Rachel stars an art student, model and ballerina along with co-star and French model Baptiste Giabiconi. Which means they’re going to sell a maximum number of mini bars!
